The VLC for iOS app–a favorite media player for many–has returned to the App Store in some countries and is expected to be available for all shortly. Some existing US users (us included!) are.

  3. Both Elmedia Player and VLC Player support a generous variety of formats. However with VLC it is sometimes required to work with codec settings for some formats in order to play them properly, which many people would rather skip and start enjoying a video right away. Additionally to many other formats, Elmedia is rather dedicated to HD/UHD videos.

  2. Click the 'Download VLC' button
  3. Once downloaded, double-click the 'vlc-2.2.4.dmg' file to mount to disk image
  4. In the resulting Finder window, drag the VLC.app to the shortcut of the 'Applications' folder
  5. Double-click the 'Applications' folder shortcut
  6. Right-click VLC and choose 'Open'
  7. Click 'Open' when you are warned that it is not from the App Store

Note that you may be prompted to authenticate as an administrator when copying to the Applications folder. Once installed and opened in that manner it will function normally when opened thereafter.

VLC Media Player is available on several popular platforms. This free and awesome player is readily available for Apple computer users. The software is freely available for Mac OS X systems. Different versions of the player is required for a different Mac OS X version and the VideoLAN team has got it covered. You will also see two web browser plugin download links. Those are for playing/streaming videos straight from your browser. The plugins are available for Intel Mac and Power Mac users. They require the OS X version to be 10.5 or lower.

Installing in Mac OS X

  1. Download VLC installation file from the location mentioned above (VideoLAN website).
  2. Locate the downloaded file which will be named something like vlc-2.1.0.dmg
  3. Open the file. After verifying the contents of the file, it will open.
  4. Click and drag the VLC icon to the applications folder. Release it.
  5. VLC will be copied to your applications folder.
  6. Double click on VLC media player (the icon with the cone). Provide it the permissions if your Mac computer asks for it.
  7. VLC Media Player will launch for the first time. Use it to play all your media with ease.
